The Canadian Academy Award, Grammy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning composer, conductor, orchestrate & music producer Howard Leslie Shore was born on 18th October, 1946. He is best remembered for his score composition to David Cronenberg's films and for the movie The Lord of the Rings. On 2nd July 2008, Shores’ first opera, The Fly premiered at the Paris Théâtre du Châtelet which was based on Cronenberg's 1986 film.
Howard Shore was born in Toronto, Canada to Jewish parents. Howard Shore is the uncle of famous composer Ryan Shore. Shore graduated from Forest Hill Collegiate Institute and then attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Howard Shore worked with the group Lighthouse between 1969 and 1972. During 1970 Shore served as the music director of short-lived television program The Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour. In 1974 Shore composed music for magician Doug Henning's magical Spellbound. He was also the musical director for Lorne Michaels' highly influential and popular late-night NBC comic show Saturday Night Live between 1975 and 1980. In 1990 Howard Shore married Elizabeth Cotnoir. The couple is happily married till date.
Howard Shore has composed music for numerous movies including the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Se7en, Ed Wood, Naked Lunch, Dogma, Panic Room, High Fidelity, The Departed & The Aviator. He received a Golden Globe for The Aviator. Starting from The Brood in 1979, Howard Shore has scored almost all films of David Cronenberg except The Dead Zone.
From 2004 onwards, Howard Shore has traveled the world performing local orchestras on the scores of Lord of the Rings. This new project is named The Lord of the Rings: Symphony in Six Movements. The future project of Shores is his scores for The Hobbit film duology which is supposed to come by 2011 and 2012. Howard Shore is also busy in making scores for “King Kong" along with Peter Jackson.
Howard Shore received the 2002 & 2003 Grammies in the category of Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for his film scores to The Lord of the Rings movies. He too won the 2004 Grammy for the song “Into the West” in the category of Best Song from film The Return of the King. Apart from Grammies, Howard Shore has earned Golden Globes for The Return of the King & The Aviator in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Shore received an Oscar in Best Original Score for The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001 and got 2003 Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as Best Original Score, both for the movie The Return of the King.
On 11th June, 2007, Howard Shore received an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from York University in Toronto. Shore has also received numerous honorary awards from The National Board of Review, The British Academy of Film And Television Arts, The Broadcast Film Critics, Recording Academy Honors, World Soundtrack Award, Chicago Film Critics, New York's Gotham Award, The Saturn Award for Science Fiction and the Genie Award. Howard Shore was also the first person who was nominated for Best Score in a Science Fiction movie The Last Mimzy during Film & TV Music Award ceremony.
